Winter Thaw: The Last Battle

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

The idea for this song came a few months before I began writing it. Using my recording app, I record melodies and motifs for future songs. The main winter thaw melody sounded mystical and reminded me of the story of the land of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. That is where my inspiration began.

I often write songs after vivid experiences that unveil hidden emotions within my state of being. I sat down and wrote this entire song in one day. After experiencing much trial and hardship for a few months, the melodies flowed easily through my fingertips, giving voice to what my heart could not express. I had been at war, in a major battle with the adversary, constantly for a time. Writing this song represented what I had been through as I worked with the Lord to overcome and defeat my enemies.

I pictured the following story in my mind as I wrote this piece. I tried to mimic the movements of the characters through different melodies in the music. As you play or listen, see if you can visualize the following story.

Winter's hold is beginning to loosen on the land. The evil gives one last sharp attack to show its dominance and power, but its power is already weakening (measures 1–4). Spring has arrived and has begun to sweep into the frozen valley. The snow and ice are beginning to melt. The snow on the evergreen trees is beginning to drip ever so slowly, and the woosh of the water gives evidence that the ice is beginning to melt (measures 5-27).

Jack Rabbit has noticed the thaw beginning and has recognized that Winter's power is weakening. He begins to quickly run through the snow to deliver his message to anyone who will hear it. Over the hills and valleys, he runs to deliver the good news (measures 28–43). Along his path, he comes upon some of the enemy in the woods. He hears the clash of their swords as they fight their opponents. Ever so carefully, Jack Rabbit tiptoes around them. He swiftly moves beyond them and finds his first listener. In hushed tones, he begins to deliver the message of the thaw and that Winter's power is weakening (measures 44–63). As he realizes he is safe, he begins to quickly detail the dripping trees and the rushing of the water (measure 64–71). After delivering his message, Jack Rabbit once more begins his journey to share that Spring has come (measures 72–89).

The picture changes to a vast battlefield. It begins with the fearful enemy approaching. Their darkness covers them like a shadow as they approach the forces of light who are standing waiting for the signal to commence the battle (measures 90–97). Courageous trees begin the fight with the dark enemy (measures 98–107). The animals join in and begin to fight (measures 108–115). The evil also marches forward and begins their attack on the forces of light. The birds swoop down in defense (measures 116–127). The battle continues with all the forces of light (animals, people, trees, and nature) fighting off their dark enemies with courage and faith (measures 128–137). Winter is losing its power; Spring has arrived. The snow is beginning to melt more quickly, and the ice is giving way (measures 138–145).

Jack Rabbit has delivered his message to others and is now approaching the battlefield (measures 146–166). Winter is thawing, and Spring is here. The forces of light are overpowering the evil as the battle's intensity increases. The evil is losing its power (measures 167–189). The good has overcome the evil. The evil has been defeated and the battle has been won. Winter is officially over, and Spring has taken her rightful place. The ice has thawed and is now flowing freely. The flowing waters share the good news that Spring has arrived in all her glory (measures 190–208).
