Sunrise over the Wheat Field

Winter Thaw (The Last Battle)

The idea for this song came a few months before I began writing it. Using my recording app, I record melodies and motifs for future songs. The main winter thaw melody sounded mystical and reminded me of the story of the land of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. That is where my inspiration began.

I often write songs after vivid experiences that unveil hidden emotions within my state of being. I sat down and wrote this entire song in one day. After experiencing much trial and hardship for a few months, the melodies flowed easily through my fingertips, giving voice to what my heart could not express. I had been at war, in a major battle with the adversary, constantly for a time. Writing this song represented what I had been through as I worked with the Lord to overcome and defeat my enemies.

As I began writing, I pictured the following story. I tried to mimic the movements of the characters and present them through melodies in the music. As you listen, see if you can visualize the following story in your mind.

Winter's hold is beginning to loosen on the land. The evil gives one last sharp attack to show its dominance and power, but its power is already weakening (measures 1–4). Spring is at the door, ready for its entrance into the long, frozen valley. The snow and ice are beginning to melt. The snow on the evergreen trees are beginning to drip ever so slowly, and the woosh of the water gives evidence that the ice is beginning to melt (measures 5-27).

Jack Rabbit has noticed the thaw beginning and has recognized that winter's power is weakening. He begins to run fast through the snow to deliver his message to all who will hear it. Over the hills and valleys, he runs to deliver the good news (measures 28–43). As Jack Rabbit approaches is he confronted by danger. He sees some of the enemy lingering in front of his path. They're clashing their swords and fighting. Ever so carefully, Jack Rabbit tiptoes as they continue to clash with and fight their opponents. Jack Rabbit carefully moves beyond them and finds his first listener. In hushed tones, he begins to deliver the message of the thaw and that Winter's power is weakening (measures 44–63). As he realizes he is safe, he begins to quickly detail the dripping trees and the rushing of the water (measure 64–71). After delivering his message, the rabbit once more begins his journey to deliver his message to all who will hear it (measures 72–89).

The picture changes to a vast battle field. It begins with the fearful enemy approaching. Their darkness covers them like a shadow as they approach the forces of light who are standing waiting for the signal to commence the battle (measures 90–97). Courageous trees begin the fight with the dark enemy (measures 98–107). The animals join in and begin to fight (measures 108–115). The evil begins marching forward and attacking. The birds swoop down in defense (measures 116–127). The battle continues with all the good forces (animals, people, trees, and nature) fighting off their dark enemies with courage and faith (measures 128–137). Winter is losing its power; spring is coming. The snow is beginning to melt more quickly, and the ice is giving way (measures 138–145).

Jack Rabbit has delivered his message to others and is now approaching the battle field (measures 146–166). Winter is thawing, and spring is officially coming. The good forces are overpowering the evil as the battle's intensity increases. The evil is losing it's power (measures 167–189). The evil is defeated and is overpowered. The good has overcome the evil. The battle won. Winter is officially over, and spring has now arrived. The water has thawed, and the spring has arrived (measures 190–208).
